Roadfood in Racine

Eating like a local:
Regional food specialties
- Roadfood Favorites in Racine Wisconsin

I love all the little lake towns found up and down Lake Michigan. I’ve taken the circle tour twice in life which allowed me to visit many of them. Though my favorite is just a short ride from home. Racine sits at the mouth of the Root River just 22 miles south of Milwaukee and 60 miles north of Chicago. It’s neighbors with Kenosha though Racine is typically looked at as the rougher of the two which is probably another reason I like it. Racine isn’t all that different from most Rust Belt towns but its location on Lake Michigan adds some prettiness to the grittiness of it. I’ve been exploring this area for a long time but never for more than a day at a time as it’s so close to home there’s no point in visiting longer than that. But I recently had a work related gig that had me in town for four nights which meant I got to hit up all the classics in one swoop. Racine is a big Roadfood town which is the main reason I like it so much. I always enjoy stopping in at the city’s iconic eateries but usually have to pick and choose as I’m typically only in town a few hours max. Racine has as good of a starting five of iconic eateries as you’ll find in a town of around 75,000. Four of the places we’ll visit have been featured on here before but never together in one swoop like this. Let's check them out.

Bendtsen's Bakery

The Kringle is Racine’s claim to fame in the food world so it’s only appropriate that we start out at the locally loved Bendtsen’s Bakery. The Kringle is said to have come to this area with the Danish in the late 1800’s. Racine would later earn the nickname Kringleville giving you an idea of just how popular the kringle is in these parts. The shareable rings of buttered and glazed pastry come in many flavors and are found all over town but my favorite comes from this fourth generation bakery. I just cant decide if it’s the cherry and cream cheese or the pecan - so I always get one of each. Since 1934.

Kewpee Sandwich Shop

There’s just 5 locations left of this once thriving franchise that Dave Thomas frequented as a kid (he once credited Kewpee as the inspiration for Wendy’s). I’ve been to them all - three are in Ohio and another is in East Lansing - but the Racine location is by far the best of the bunch. In fact it’s one of the better burgers anywhere. Kewpee is the second oldest hamburger chain in the country having been founded in Flint Michigan all the way back in 1923. Named after the Kewpie doll it’s currently headquartered in Lima Ohio where their downtown location is a local landmark. Though both the Racine and East Lansing locations are separately owned meaning the burgers are a bit different at each of them. There’s a rumor they still grind beef hearts into the blend here in Racine but I don’t know for sure. What I do know is the beef tastes like it used to and the double cheeseburger here is one of my favorite burgers anywhere. They have some weird hours (8a-2p) and some even weirder dolls staring at you as you eat sit in their oldest of old school dining rooms, but this is a burger worth seeking out. Not just one of Wisconsin’s best but one of the best burgers anywhere. Since 1926.

DeMark's Bar & Restaurant

It only took me a decade since first learning of it but I finally made it to DeMarks Bar & Restaurant for their popular Pizza Burger for the very first time last summer. You may have had a pizza burger before but unless you’ve been here you haven’t had the original which is unlike all others. It starts with what they simply call “pizza sausage” but it isn’t just sausage like that on a pizza. It’s a full fledged patty that’s 100% pork but texturally it’s just like a thick and juicy burger. I don’t know how they get it like they do but my best guess is they grind their Italian sausage into a more coarse product than usual. The end result is a fennel forward flavor bomb that’s easily the best “bomber” I ever ate in Racine and or Kenosha - bombers are what they call Italian beef, sausage, and meatball sandwiches loaded with marinara, melted cheese and hot peppers on French bread in these parts. DeMark’s is a textbook tavern with a fully sized shuffle board and all sorts of cold booze available for there or taking out. They started serving drinks back in 1939 although the business itself goes all the way back to 1906.

La Tapatia

Racine is a crispy taco town as evidenced in this post from 2016. But not the kind made of store bought shells, the type made crispy by frying them to order. There’s handfuls of spots around Racine making real deal tacos dorados but this family run convenience store with a restaurant in back was the first and is still the best. Get them with ground beef and be generous with the salsa. Since 1981.

Wells Brothers

What more can I say about this place? There was a time when there was little info online about the legend that is Wells Brothers Pizza. It was named one of the country’s best pizza spots in a random list in USA Today circa 2005 which sparked someone on LTHforum to ask about it but the thread went silent for four years until I visited back in 2009. I posted about it on here around that same time and have been hyping it up ever since then. No I’m not taking total credit for its popularity outside of Racine but I can tell you right now I’m the one that set it in motion as there was a time when my blog post would pop up as the first result when you searched Wells Brothers online as there was little coverage of it outside of that. Wells Brothers was also featured in a New York Times piece by Kenji Lopez who learned about it thru Steve Dolinsky who was taken there by me. The sausage pizza is why you’re here - it’s my favorite pizza anywhere. It’s pretty much the only thing I ever get but sometimes I’ll also add a side of spaghetti and meatball and yes meatball is meant to be singular in that you can get a side of spaghetti with a house meatball for like $3 and it’s pretty damn good.

Spaghetti and Meatball

Pizza Burger

The pizza isn’t quite as thin as that at Zaffiros in nearby Milwaukee but it’s still one of the thinnest anywhere and I love the cornmeal crust on the bottom. They almost always cook it perfectly which is a bit on the well done side resulting in a crispy crust throughout. Wells also makes the best Italian sausage so that’s what you should get as far as toppings. You can also try a pizza burger here which is made with that same incredible made on site sausage and it’s worth an order should you need something on top of the pizza. While not quite as good as DeMark’s it's different enough to stand out on its own. When I was working up here in December I knew I would be taking a pizza home with me so I was finally able to stop in and try their popular lasagna which is $12.25 with soup or salad on Wednesdays. On top of that you can add a piece of Italian sausage for a buck. What a deal! My only complaint was I wish they put more melted cheese on top but other than that it was peak red sauce Italian. I’ll always have a special spot for the 2009 inaugural winner of the “Roadfood Stop of the Year” which is why I almost always stop here anytime I’m near. The pizza reheats really well so I often take it home but dining in at Wells Brothers is an experience in of itself. Sit at the bar and get a large sausage pizza and indulge in a cold Spotted Cow or one dollar cans of Hamm’s for full effect. Since 1921 - though the pizza recipe came up from Chicago with some relatives post World War II.

Racine Wisconsin Taco Tour

- Chowing on Wisconsin

In celebration of today's faux American holiday lets eat some tacos! Today's post is actually an extension of a previous one so if it seems familiar it is but there's new spots added in. We're off to Racine Wisconsin aka Taco Doradoland aka The Golden Taco Capitol aka Fried Taco Town, USA. I'm not sure exactly why but for whatever reason you can find crispy fried tacos all over town. Today we take a stroll and try many of them. Please let me know in the comments any I might've missed.

La Tapatia

Fellow local eats explorer Peter Engler aka Rene G on LTHforum had written this place up as a worthy stop for a cheap lunch. Locals love their freshly prepared crispy tacos. They're made in a semi-open air kitchen by quickly frying each side of the tortilla. Nice call. I've enjoyed these in the past while passing thru to Milwaukee. I go with ground beef as that's what works best with this style of taco. La Tapatia are the best fried tacos I've had where the meat doesn't go in until after the shell is fried.

Crispy Taco Plate ($4.59)

I did a little google search and found a place in town called Taqueria Nuevo Vallarta that was calling my name. I'd read their menu online and they offer fried tacos. As I took a peek at the menu someone posted on Yelp I spied "Tacos Fritos" which in turn immediately shot it onto my radar.

Taqueria Nuevo Vallarta

You can't order tacos dorados to go unless you plan on eating them as soon as you step outside so I chose to dine in and was given a couple really well balanced made in-house tomato salsas (mild and hot) which were the old school Mexican-American type I adore. Six minutes later my tacos fritos were ready. They come four to a plate ($5.25) and while I'm sure you could ask for a different filling they only list ground beef as the option. I knew I wanted these when I read the description "Filled with Ground Beef and Deep Fried" Keyword being 'and'. While spots like La Tapatia prove you can make good crispy's that get filled after the tortilla is turned golden, I much prefer the spots frying the shells with the meat inside. As always these were wonderful, to me anyway. On top of these they have a menu section dedicated to "Crunch" so next time I plan on trying the Fried Flour Tortilla Taco.

Tacos Fritos at Taqueria Nuevo Vallarta in Racine

The tacos dorados plate seems to be popular all over town. On top of the two spots posted up above I've found them on the menu at a couple other places which means there's a good chance there's more. This spot escaped me until a recent trek to Milwaukee took me thru Racine for something to eat. Not all that different from La Tapatia up above as far as the setup goes. It's a grocery store with a tiny open air kitchen in the back corner and a single table in front of it.

Santa Fe Liquors & Groceries

Most people are taking tacos and or cigarettes and booze to-go. The taco plates come four to an order and are what everyone is ordering. Not a bad lunch for under five bucks. These little guys are deep fried with the meat inside and toothpicks holding the shell in place. The ground beef mixture was a bit bland but other than that they make a respectable rendition of my ultimate guilty pleasure.

Plate of Ground Beef Tacos

Then there's also this joint below which I'd been into before but didn't see tacos dorados or crispy tacos etc on the menu so I passed, which was a mistake. This trip in I could tell this is a place that would be in Little Village or on the East Side of the city if it was in Chicago.

Taqueria Gran Morelos

Three older ladies were behind the counter and each of them was tending to something, be it the huge pot of fresh frijoles charros being made or chopping down some cilantro, they were all at work. The plates of the soft shell tacos eaten by the locals looked and smelled wonderful but I was there to see if they did the fried taco plates like the others. As it turns out the ground beef option is served standard as tacos dorados. These are also fried whole and include both shredded chihuahua cheese as well as crop dusts of Parmesan. Maybe the crispiest tacos I've ate to date. Racine may be the death of me.

Tacos Dorados

I had had a hunch after trying all those spots above that there were more. Hunch confirmed. Here are a few more consumed from there. Many of them found through through the comments to this little tidbit from a useful Southeast Wisconsin Food talk site. Next up might be the new #1.

Mi Jacalito

This place feels like it belong somewhere in old Austin or something. Big menu with lots of interesting stuff. Quite a few people dining in on my visits and many had big bowls of Menudo. Orders of crispy tacos come by the four and cost a whooping $4. These were very well fried with nicely spiced beef and lots of mexican crumbling cheese which I think works best with these. As good of an example of the Racine style Crispy Fried Taco Plate as I've found.

Crispy Taco Plate

Next stop is a place that I know was mentioned on LTHforum before. I was always intrigued to try Mexico lindo but when it's a stones throw from Wells Brothers it's hard to make room for both.

Mexico Lindo

I don't know what year this restaurant goes back to but it's got to be the 70's or early 80's as it feels like a time warp inside. We got a crispy taco plate with avocado added on. I like the folding job, looks like they hold it shut with tongs and fry them for a little bit before toppings go on. But they needed to be fried a little harder as they were slightly greasy and under-fried thus not much crunch was involved.

Crispy Tacos with Avocado added on

I wish we had these spots that double as liquor stores and taco shops. They seem to be a thing in Racine. I wish we had a few in Chicago although we still wouldn't have the option for Spotted Cow and Crispy Taco Plates but just the latter is still better than neither nor.

Taqueria La Mexicana

This place sells single bottles so you can enjoy a beer with your tacos if you want to eat them inside of there. These were a fine example as the meat is fried inside the shell though not quite as good as some of the others like Tapatia and Gran Morelos.

Crispy Taco Plate

Unfortunately you're always going to have duds and that's what we got when we checked out a spot that got some love in those aforementioned comments.

Taqueria Arandas

This place had the looks and the feels of a spot that would serve a classic crispy taco plate it wasn't meant to be. Just a separately fried shell stuffed with beef. The textures just aren't the same and in the case of the crispy fried taco more meat isn't better as it just throws off the balance.

Crispy Taco

I became immediately intrigued when I had seen a comment on Wisconsin Food Talk about the local long time Chinese restaurant having excellent crispy tacos. You know crispy tacos are a big deal in these parts when the Chinese takeout spot is serving them up. We had to try them.

Whey Chai

Another old school spot where it doesn't feel like much has changed. They have an entire Mexican portion to the menu and you know Crispy Tacos are listed first. I ordered a plate and waited. When the lady yelled over to me that my tacos were ready everyone at a table on the other side veered their head toward me looking mystified that someone was ordering tacos at a Chinese place. In the end these were the least liked of this bunch as the shells were fried without the meat inside. Though they did have a slightly egg rolly taste probably due to the oil so it was at least interesting though probably not worth ordering again. See ya'll next time.

Travel Wisconsin

-Wisconsin: Good Times & GREAT Eats

Travel Month @chibbqking travels on...Wisconsin. Those in the know and people who follow the site know we like to 'Travel WI' a whole lot. Wanna see for yourself? All you gotta do is click HERE and it will link you to every story posted from Wisco both past and future that has been featured on S'C'&C. You can scroll down and click "older posts" to go thru them all.

On we continue with 'Eating Wisconsin'

So for today's feature I figured lets travel around the entire state and get some of these places I've been to on my travels out there for others to explore and eat at. I am a born and raised Chicago boy 'til death does me in. Chicago is the best city out there. But my favorite state just might be Wisconsin. It became a quick summertime hobby for me to scoot around the state and take in the great views, lifestyle and what I came to learn was one of the best eating and drinking places anywhere. Lets take a picture trip around the state. Shall we? We'll start in Kenosha and Racine and work our way up to the Bayfield and Lake Superior region of the state.

The Kenosha/Racine area is my favorite Chicago Suburb

Since we have many regular readers from Chicago do let me tell you that Kenosha and Racine are great day and or one night and wkd trips whether you do or don't have kids, they got sumtin' for everyone. You can do some shopping at the Outlet Mall or take the family on a tour of the Jelly Belly factory or maybe you just want to rest and relax and enjoy a day on some sand by the lake with the sun, theres something for everyone. As we 'Travel WI' here today I'm going to show you why I love to make my way around the great eating state.

The Spot Drive In featured in the 'Burgers of WI' seen HERE

The Kenosha area is a hot bed for good 'roadfood' eats. Part of the allure is that many of it's most popular places haven't changed. They still have an old Drive In Theater that's in full operation during summer as well as quite a few old school Drive In's. I like to get out there and explore and have featured many of their places and have many more yet to be posted.

also seen on 'The Burgers of WI' tour. Click HERE.

It's also a great area for old school Italian foods both restaurants, shops and delis. Real Chicago style pizza is cracker thin cut in squares made with real Italian sausage aka tavern style. This is what those who grew up in Chicago grew up on, not the touristy deep dish. Well let me tell you something, from Kenosha and Racine up into Milwaukee and even a few places beyond, Wisconsin has some great 'tavern style Midwest thin' pizza places. In fact I think the best pizza in the world is served in Racine and I'm not ashamed to say this. We have plenty of places in Chicago right on par with Well's Brothers but there's just something about that place and it's pizza.

Kind of tiring checking out all those buildings out huh? Lets get some food. Milwaukee is what I consider to be one of the most underrated cities in all of America. I love going up there. It reminds me of Chicago in the 80's and early 90's with so many locally owned places still doing it up right. They call Chicago the "city of neighborhoods" and I call Milwaukee the city "that's one big neighborhood melting pot" there are so many cultures represented there and they all bring their best when it comes to food and beer. The World's largest outdoor music festival aka Summerfest is going on now. Great times along the lake.

Another one of my favorite places to stay at for a weekend is my former stomping grounds of Madison. It's a great college town with so much more to offer. It's also the perfect hub where you can stay at and still be close to some great outdoor activities by day and fun times at night. If you don't wanna do three nights in the Dells, what adult would? Just stay in Madison and take the hour drive to the waterparks and or go see many other great Wisconsin towns and activities that are within a short drive. Devils Lake might be the best STATE park in the state. Lets take a look at two food stops I liked alot while in college.

One of the cool WI towns I speak of when I mention how there are many within a hour or so drive from Madison is New Glarus aka America's Little Switzerland which is one of my favorite towns in America. I love visiting this beautiful old world place. With a population of just under 2,500 they sure got alot to offer. It's not under the radar or anything and already a popular tourist destination due to it's Swiss heritage which makes you think your there in Switzerland while you walk around. They also have some great dining options and classic Wisconsin taverns including a Cubs bar.

Summertime is a great time to stroll thru as there may be a festival going on or just to take a walk around and take in the views of the old world architecture and of course a tour of the brewery. New Glarus Brewing Company is one of the best micro brewers in America. They only distribute within the state and I always bring a case or two home with me when I go 'Travel Wisconsin'. I love the people and state but the Governor is an absolute moron they could do without. Seriously? screwing over the smaller family owned business' with hard working people putting out quality products like that? C'mon m'aaan. Your an idiot on this one.

The Burgers of Wisconsin

One of my most followed features here on the site is 'The Burgers of Wisconsin' which is my roundup of burgers consumed while in state. Everyone knows about the cheese, brats, beer, bakeries and so on but did you know when it comes to burgers, Wisconsin just might be the heavyweight state champ? In fact the hamburger is said to have become in Seymour which has an annual Hamburger Festival to celebrate. As we 'Travel WI' here today I want to share with you a few more burgers I have had while making my way thru the land. Every time I'm cruising the state I'll find a great food place that pops up out of nowhere. Here's an example below. Gotta burger place that's your absolute favorite? Let me know.

Elkhorn, WI

I Stopped inside Lake Country Market and it was really nice with a good selection of wine/beer, produce, fresh baked breads, regional cheeses, a deli and most everything you need for a summer bbq including the beef and steaks and also prepared food like fresh made sandwiches and burgers and brats made on the grill out back. I was even tempted by their super thin crust pizza they make fresh upon order. I went with a build your own burger which you do by filling out a little piece of paper by circling what you want on it from their options. I also had to try some mini burgers as they called them which were a buck and change with cheese on them.

The regular burger was $5.99 and with the very fresh toppings paired with a fresh baked bun and some Wisconsin aged cheddar. The burger was awesome, a great piece of fresh tasting beef charred up perfectly on the grill, it was very delightful. The beef was fantastic, very fresh and although somewhat lean it was full of flavor. Nice place to have if your from Elkhorn, have a summer place near there or are vacationing in the area.

Bayfield/Lake Superior Region

Last summer me and a buddy made the trek way up north to one of America's best small towns, Bayfield. This was my 2nd trip to the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore and Bayfield and the area around it was everything I remembered it to be - pristine beauty is abundant. This is a great summer getaway destination and well worth the drive. We went to a few beaches that we drove off to and they were great. Lake Superior's water never really gets warm but the sun was bright and shining the days we were at the beach, it was hot and being able to take a dip in the cold fresh water and come out feeling alive and not salty is a great thing and the reason I prefer the Great Lakes to the ocean when it comes swimming. That and there's no sharks in the lakes. I was I was up there right now. This is a place all people of all ages can enjoy a peaceful getaway. The outdoors is your playground up there.

The Burgers of Wisconsin

You can never eat enough hamburgers and it just so happens, I gotta great spot while up that way. I took a little cruise around a few towns while we were staying in Bayfield and found a top notch burger spot while riding around. Ashland is a small town was like so many others in Wisconsin and has its Main street with an old theater, painted murals on the walls and all sorts of old buildings many of which are vacant, others have shops inside that have been around for ages. Its also the home to South Shore Brewery and they have a real nice place in one of those old buildings and some great beer. I took the ride down Main street and spotted Buddies Burgers.

Ashland, WI

I went on in and ordered a double cheese with grilled onions, pickles and mustard. It got good when I saw under the burger part of the menu "fresh. never frozen" and then it got better when the young lady working solo went back to the kitchen and took care of business. Always a good sign when it takes a little time and after about 10 minutes I was good to go. This was an excellent old fashioned 50's style cheeseburger. The patties had some crispness on the edges but weren't super thin. The grilled onions were some of the best I ever had on a burger and the fresh beef paired with them and the rest of the toppings including the soft bun made it another excellent burger to be had in Wisconsin.

I'm sure everyone is stuffed from all that food and tired from all the sightseeing to be done while traveling the roads of Wisconsin, and sadly this where our virtual tour ends. If your planning a summertime getaway or ever plan on checking out the state with all sorts of fun during all four seasons for all ages than your best bet is to start with the people who know how to do it best. Travel Wisconsin is the states official tourism board and the place to go to when you start planning your Wisconsin vacation. Feel free to email me with any questions you think I can be a help with.

See ya next time on America: The Beautiful
