Twain

-Grubbing in Chicago
New to the 'Scene'

Over the last few years the stretch of Milwaukee through Logan Square has seen a big boom in bars and restaurants. There's no signs of a slowdown with new openings being announced monthly. One of the more interesting ones was Twain which came around near the end of the summer last year.

Newly Opened in Logan Square

Twain is a couples homage to Midwest cooking. The menu here takes inspiration from Midwest culinary traditions as well as spiral laced cookbooks from churches and Junior leagues. There's lots to work with as far as that goes. Some of the more interesting things I've ate from here include a delicious braunschweiger pate. Served with some fresh rye bread and a mustard sauce this tasted like something I'd get at Baumgartner's in Monroe, WI. I loved the livery taste of the housemade pate smeared on the bread with mustard. Unfortunately I don't think is on the menu anymore. Other fun little odes to the Midwest include a twice baked potato gnocchi which was made with fluffy gnocchi sitting in a hallowed out potato skin and topped with bacon, sour cream, and cheese. One of the Midwest's best food traditions is represented in a plate of fried perch served with crispy potatoes.

Midwest Comfort Food at Twain

You cant really have a restaurant these days without a burger. You definitely cant have a Midwest  menu without one. I had my eyes on Twain's burger from the time they opened. I didn't get it right away and it kind of changed up while I waited. Originally they were serving their classic double on a housemade Sheboygan style hard roll but it seems like they switched that up to a sesame seeded roll. The burger is dressed with St. Louis favorite Provel cheese and mustard and pickles. It's a damn good burger but even better are the fries. Cooked in beef tallow these are my new favorite fries in the neighborhood now that Animale has closed. Go during Happy Hour and you can have them on the cheap with some good drink specials. I still need to try the chicken and dumpling dish many have mentioned as delicious. As a resident of the neighborhood this is exactly the type of spot you like to have as your neighbor. Laid back meal or night out with friends. You can go either way at Twain.

The Honey Baked Ham Co.

-The Sammy's of Chi

I'd long wondered about the Honey Baked Ham Co. If I remember correctly they used to have a spot on Grand. Actually that may have been an entirely different ham operation for all I know. I just know for sure I was always interested in ordering a mail order ham but we never really ate whole hams in my family. So I was never familiar with what the Honey Baked Ham Co. is other than a franchise.

Location in Lakeview

I recently decided to stop in after I saw someone else had checked in from here on social media. I'd never really known they did sandwiches. I always just assumed they were an outlet for people to pick up hams they order online or by phone and it's still that. But they smartly added a cafe aspect to their stores as a way of getting more customers in. Bc as much as I want to order one of their hams I don't have a use for so much of it. I was actually hoping maybe they sold ham bones that one could make split pea soup and such with but you have to buy a ham and eat most of it to get that coveted soup bone. When I learned that Honey Baked Ham Co. was founded in Detroit I got a little more confident in them. There's nowhere else in the States where they take ham sandwiches as serious as Detroit does. Turns out as far as a sandwich franchise goes these guys are pretty serious about ham sandwiches too. I tried the Tavern Club served with their signature ham, smoked turkey breast, bacon, cheddar, lettuce, tomato, mayo, honey mustard on multigrain bread. Served with a little cup of potato salad I was surprised how much I liked this very well put together sandwich. Both the ham and turkey were thick sliced and definitely not the generic sandwich meat served at other franchised spots.

Noodle Deli

-Grubbing in Chicago(land)
A new noodle emporium in the Suburbs

There's some exciting openings happening out in the NW suburbs. The Hoffman Estates / Palatine / Schaumburg area has been a hotbed for international dining for over a decade now. Expect to see quite a few openings over the next six months. A few spots having already arrived. One of them is this new noodle shop in Hoffman that goes by Noodle Deli. It sits in the middle of a large strip mall.

Newly Opened in Hoffman Estates

I'm not sure what used to be housed in this space but it looks and feels like one of those old time suburban sushi shacks. I couldn't figure out what type of restaurant this was by just looking at the menu. It's fairly large with hints this place could be Chinese, Korean, or even Taiwanese. Eventually I just asked our friendly waitress and she told me the owner was from Shaanxi, China. This made sense since there's a few dishes from this region. One of my favorites being shredded potato stir fry. We got an order off of the chefs special section and it delivered in the taste department. For those that aren't sure what this is they finely shred potatoes and then stir fry them. Like hash browns.

Stir Fry Potatoes at Noodle Deli

The noodle selection is abundant. There must be at least 15 options. All of them with your choice of noodles all of which are made in house. From what I could gather the tomato beef noodle soups seemed to be one of their specialties. They offer it a few ways as far as what type of beef you want with it. I tried this with the tendon and it was wonderful. No idea which country this dish has a background in but I do remember tomato soup being big in Hong Kong. What I liked about this was it wasn't too tomatoey. The beef tendon was extra tender and that was really nice too. You could tell the noodles were freshly cut bc they lost their firmness as time passed by. The portions are no joke and neither is the pricing. Most noodle bowls are right around $10 and could maybe feed two. I'd go back.

Stopping in at three Paducah Favorites

Eating like a local:
Regional food specialties

- Where to eat in Paducah

Late last Fall I took a ride down to Southern Illinois to visit an old friend. We spent three days canvassing the area checking out all that was worth seeing as far as sights and stuff. One of those days we rode over the Ohio River into Paducah Kentucky. I was surprised by how artsy the downtown area was. It was really well upkept and a fun little spot to check out. Of course our main reason for visiting was Roadfood. There were three spots on my radar that I really wanted to try. Shall we?

Starne's Barbecue

It doesn't get the same amount of love as Texas BBQ or North Carolina style 'cue but Kentucky has a great BBQ culture. It's one that runs deep with no specific set of traditions or rules. There's a few different pockets where the specialty might be totally different than elsewhere. While it’s true Western KY BBQ is usually associated with mutton that’s mostly in Henderson and Owensboro. Elsewhere around there you’ll find lots of different smoked meat options but chopped pork is king.

a peek inside (and out)

Whole shoulders are smoked for 12 hours at Starnes. The same way they were on Day 1 back in 1955. The signature dish here and elsewhere in the area consists of chopped pork going in between two buttered pieces of toast and then into a panini press. So it’s a toasted barbecue sandwich. But the star is the vinegar based bbq sauce that packs real deal heat. Kentucky doesn’t get mentioned as much as other states when it comes to their ‘que but they probably should be. Lots of old school spots. Especially in the Paducah area. I screwed up timing on two so we didn't get to eat elsewhere as far as BBQ on this trip goes. However I stopped into an old Drive-In selling BBQ sandwiches on a previous trip through Paducah. You can check out that stop and others in KY by clicking HERE.

Doe's Eat Place

No way I was going to be in Paducah and not do some Delta Tamales at Doe’s Eat Place. The Mississippi Delta institution has been serving the people of Greenville since 1941. In fact at first it was a Black people only joint where whites had to enter through the back door. It’s a long time spot on my hit list. Said to be one of the country’s best steakhouse experiences. Though it’s those tamales I yearn for. Easily one of my favorite regional snacks in America. No one knows the exact origin but the cornmeal tubes are stuffed with spicy ground beef and then simmered in water that’s also spiced. A product of the regions African Americans who almost certainly mingled with Mexicans but no one knows exactly how they came to be. We took a roadtrip through the Delta and did a tamale tour a while back and it was a trip I’ll never forget. So while Paducah isn’t in the Delta these tamales were more than enough to evoke flashbacks to that trip. Turns out this location is owned by a descendant of Big Doe the founding father who immigrated to Mississippi from Sicily. Try them with some chili!

Just Hamburgers

Here's one that really intrigued me. Name sound familiar? No? That's ok you're not as obsessive as me. As soon as I found this place I was wondering whether or not they had any relationship to Just Hamburgers in Paxton, IL. The Central IL burger shop is one of my home states best burgers. As soon as we pulled up to here I had a pretty good feeling there was some sort of connection. They have the same sign and logo after all. The guys working the grill here were stoner type high school kids and if I'm being honest my burger came out rather fast. That said they're also fast up in Paxton and that's bc these are Central Illinois style smashed burgers. Small balls of beef are smashed until crispy and it happens pretty quickly. I ended up calling the Illinois location to ask if there was a connection and while the guy on the other line couldn't give me exact details he said the Kentucky spot is owned by a relative of the Paxton location. Good burger but not quite as good as the IL location.

Rico's Pizza

-The other Chicago-style pizza: Tavern Style

I always get excited when I'm made aware of an old school Chicagoland spot that I have yet to check off. So when my guy @southsideslither told me about his favorite pizza place I told him we gotta go. It took us a minute to make that happen but just a couple months ago we rolled over to the South suburb town of Lansing near the Illinois/Indiana border. Home to Rico's Pizza. A locals favorite.

Locals Favorite in Lansing

As my guy told me this was the pizza he grew up on. They’ve been carry out / delivery since the 70’s. First trip in and the things that stood out most were the not too sweet sauce and the fact they don’t paint the pie too red with it. The topping portioning was perfect. It reminded me a bit of Villa Nova. The sausage was missing that fennel us Chicagoan's love and my guy had mentioned that was something he noticed a while back. Other than that this was a really well made tavern thin pizza. You know your city’s pizza scene is legit when a place like this can stay relatively unknown. Check it out.

Chicken Pollo Shack

-Grubbing in Chicago
A new Humboldt Park Chicken Specialist

After the guys from Philly Bros moved from Humboldt to Lincoln Park I wondered what would replace them in that space. I remembered how they really cleaned up the inside and made it seem like new. It seemed like the perfect opportunity for someone looking for their own restaurant space. Not only was it ready for move-in but rent had to be cheaper in these parts than a neighborhood over in Logan Square. Well it sat empty for over a year which was surprising. It wasn't until just recently that it became inhabited once again. This time in the form of a chicken shack from a familiar face to a few of us. The family behind Xocome Antojeria sold that spot and the son now runs Chicken Pollo Shack.

 Newly Opened in Humboldt Park

The location of Chicken Pollo Shack might be a bit further west than most have traveled. But you're rewarded with a meal that would cost upwards of 33% more if it was in any of the trendier 'hoods. At first the name might sound a bit repetitive but not when you learn they do both fried chicken and also grilled chicken. The former can be ordered anywhere from a 1/4 bird to a whole one while the grilled is available in half and whole portions. Fried chicken comes with cole slaw and fries. Pollo Asado comes with tortillas, rice, and beans. What you see pictured below is a 1/4 of fried with 1/2 of grilled. You get to choose between a handful of homemade sauces including an ode to Chicago style mild.

Chicken Feast at Chicken Pollo Shack

Both the fried chicken and the pollo asado are pretty damn good. The grilled bird is rubbed with their chimichurri sauce and so it comes out a bit oily but that oil settles into the tortillas really well. Speaking of which they're using El Popocatepetl brand corn tortillas which are easily the best of their kind in the city. The fried chicken paired best with the housemade Chicago style mild sauce. The sauce itself was really good and I'll probably end up getting some wings with it next time. As far as which style I preferred they're both good and very reasonably priced but the tie always goes to tacos.

More Indiana Tacos

-Exploring NW Indiana

Loyal readers may remember a series of posts having to do with crispy tacos in NW Indiana. Those same loyal readers might also realize that this weekend's Cinco de Mayo celebration can only mean one thing here at S'C'&C. Gringo tacos! That's right. The last few years I've brought you different posts featuring some of the Midwest's best crispy tacos. The Northwest Indiana region is one of the handful of crispy taco hot spots on the American map. You can look back to my previous reports on all the Americanized Mexican tacos by clicking HERE for the original and HERE for the follow up.
________________________________________________________________________

The Town Club Restaurant (Highland, IN)

I never knew of taco night at this NW Indiana favorite for lake perch until I stopped in on a Wednesday. Having not seen anyone eating them I decided to go ahead and get one ($3) without asking what they were. Fingers crossed they were the signature deep fried tacos of these parts. Well even though these are a bit different than the standard style found around here they're still fried tacos and thus I enjoyed my single serving. Flour tortillas are lightly fried and steak replaces the standard ground beef and while it does get semi dry it also gets well crisped. A little bit of salsa, sour cream, as well as a nice amount of melted cheese on the bottom made up for the dryness. Lettuce, tomato, shredded cheese go on top. I thought this was a nice Midwest style Fried Taco. When I walked to the restroom I noticed a newspaper article about the tacos. So the story goes the then owner was inspired by some tacos he ate in Jamaica (lol) back in 1963. He then decided to put something similar to them on the menu at TC as a way to compete with some of the other spots in the area that we're starting to serve Mexican food. His niche was right as customers started to flock here on Wednesdays for his unique lightly fried steak tacos. Could this be the taco that triggered the trend in NWI? Prob not but it's a good to one to pair in a 1-2 punch with the legendary Loncar's who also does tacos on Wednesdays. The readily available Lake Perch sandwich at Town Club is always on point.

Dan the Man's Taco Stand (Rossville, IN)

I came across this sign up above when driving down the Main street of some random Indiana town. I guess Dan aka the Man used to work over at Indiana Beach in his High School days. It's there where he learned to make the parks signature tacos which are served inside the park at a place called 'Taco Shoppe'. Taco Shoppe is synonymous with the beach as a couple of their crispy fried tacos are a part of many visitors visits. I always wanted to go try them but I'm not visiting Indiana Beach just to eat them. Even I have my limits. Dan's are said to be the same recipe which is a softly fried white corn tortilla stuffed with ground beef topped with lettuce, tomato, cheese. Not sure why but Indiana has a strong deep fried taco culture though these weren't as good as the ones you'll find in Da Region.

R Bar & Grill (Highland, IN)

Here we have what I believe to be an Eastern European owned bar that sits in a strip mall in Highland Indiana. This is not the type of spot you'd expect to find deep fried tacos at yet because we're in Northwest Indiana it's pretty much always a possibility you'll find them. Here they do them Tuesday's only. They're not the best representation of this style of taco so there's really no reason to wait until Tuesday to try them when there's better spots serving them through the week. But if this is your local watering hole it's not a bad thing to have fresh fried meat in the shell tacos avail. They execute them nicely as far as prep but the shell wasn't hard enough and I couldn't really detect much seasoning in the beef. All that said I still ate both and would get them again if this we're my local spot to drink.

Middle Brow Bungalow

-Grubbing in Chicago
New to the 'Scene'

One of the years best openings came along right at the start of 2019. Middle Brow's journey to Logan Square took close to a decade. Bungalow is their first brick and mortar space as they'd used many other breweries to brew their beer along the way. It's the latest hot spot on a part of Armitage one can easily argue is the city's best stretch of dining. It's part brewery, part bakery, and all good. The bakery aspect allows them to be an all day operation. A huge outdoor patio is coming this summer.

 Newly Opened in Logan Square

As delicious as the beer is it's kind of took a backseat with me. That's bc you can make the case that Middle Brow Bungalow is home to the city's best bread baker. That program is helmed by a baking vet who came back to Chicago from San Francisco. The Northern Cali city is considered the baking hub of America. Well thanks for teaching some Chicago folks the ropes. The bread program here is fantastic. One of my best bites of the year thus far came from a simple little dish consisting of house made cream cheese spread on a piece of toasted sprouted rye bread. Drizzled with some oil and sprinkled with chives this was outstanding. I am very happy to have them the neighborhood.

Sprouted Rye with House Cream Cheese at Middle Brow Bungalow

Breads and spreads are available up until 2p and then they switch over to an evening menu at 4p. There's pizza available pretty much all day but more on that in a minute. The bread program doesn't end midday it just switches over to a different menu featuring what they call table bread. It's kind of like a charcuterie board but the bread is the main act. There's a few different options and one of the more interesting ones to me is a whipped mortadella spread served with pistachios and pickles.

Table Bread with Mortadella spread at Middle Brow Bungalow

For most the biggest draw to the Bungalow has been their pizza. Which is saying alot bc this town is saturated with pizza places and many of us already have our spots we like. Well you can make room for Middle Brow Bungalow on your list. Because if you don't you'll be missing out on what's some of the best pizza being made in the city at the moment. It's pretty unique in that I don't have any other spots to compare it to. The dough is made in-house and might be the best part of this artisan pizza. It's soft but also crisp and extra chewy. It's almost like the really high quality toppings get overshadowed. But perhaps the most praiseworthy part of this place is their philanthropy in giving back half of their profits to various organizations around town. Between the brewer, the baker, the chef, and the rest of the staff at Bungalow you'll be hard pressed to find a better restaurant team.

Momo World

-Grubbing in Chicago(land)
Nepalese Dumplings near UIC

Most of the time when a new spot opens up shop it takes a place in line on my hit list. But every now and then a place will open and it gets to go directly to the front of the line. That was the case for Momo World which opened just last week over on Maxwell street in the UIC area. Momo being Nepalese style dumplings which are quite possibly my favorite form of dumplings. I had to go.

 Newly Opened in UIC Village

During the last few years the momo has risen into the ranks of beloved dumplings of the food world. In NYC there's an annual momo crawl through Queens that attracts lots of attention from the food media world which in turn has kind of put momo in the spotlight. Just a few years ago there was virtually nowhere in Chicago to get momo. But that's changed as we now have a handful of spots where it can be found. The problem now for me is finding a place that serves beef filled momo. To me beef works best as the most common filling in Nepal is yak which we don't have easy access to. In my opinion the seasonings used in momo go best with beef. Unfortunately they aren't making beef momo at Momo World but they do have pork which is nice. Most places tend to have just chicken or veggie.

 Pork Momo at Momo World

An order of traditional steamed momo come ten to an order (I ate one before taking a pic) and served with a tomato based dipping sauce which along with a cilantro option is common amongst momo vendors. These were tasty but I was wishing they had the flavor combinations that made me fall in love with momo in the first place. I didn't taste much cumin, cilantro, or the other stuff. All that said what I did taste was some fresh pork with herbs which still hit the spot. The menu features momo served a bunch of different ways such as grilled on a skewer or sitting in a soup. They also offer Sekuwa in the form of a bowl. Sekuwa is a popular pork dish made from twice cooked pork that's stir fried with peppers, tomatoes and spicing. It comes served with rice and is a tasty little lunch for just $6. Clearly this place is geared towards the local college kids. I hope they embrace it bc it's much better than alot of the other stuff geared towards them. This is a family run spot as dad was making sure everything was good in front while the daughter helped take/deliver orders and mom cooked.

Friday Fish Fry in SE Wisconsin

Eating like a local:
Regional food specialties
- Where to Friday Fish Fry in Wisconsin

It's been a minute since we traveled Wisconsin. With the weather turning it's getting close to that time where Chicagoan's hit the road in search of sausage and relaxation. Lenten season might be over but the Friday Fish Fry's in Wisconsin never end. The fish fry is celebrated every Friday of the calendar year in Wisconsin. As far as food traditions go the Friday Fish Fry in Wisconsin is right up there with the best of the best. It's amazing that no matter where you are in the state you wont be far from a fish fry if it's a Friday. This is partly bc you're never far from a bar and pretty much every bar in the state offers a Friday Fish Fry. Today we head to SE Wisconsin to visit five different fish fry's where they're using lake fish. For me the key to finding a good fry is finding spots that offer a combo of lake perch, walleye, or blue gill. That's not to say that a fish fry featuring cod cant be good. But fried cod and fries is essentially just fish and chips and you can score that anywhere. I want the local stuff.

You're never far from a Friday Fish Fry in Wisconsin

Wegner's St. Martin's Inn (Franklin, WI)

First stop is one of the most popular fish fry's in the state. I tried to go here twice before I finally made it and arrived to insanely long wait times. On a recent trip we got there at 3:55p (they start at 4p) and were the last of the first group to be seated. Bc of it's location near a race track the walls are decked with personally signed photos of famous racers who've stopped by for food and drink. They call Wegner's a casual fine dining spot. The fish fry has been featured in a slew of publications including Saveur. It's a pretty traditional version with lake perch served with potato pancakes, cole slaw, and buttered rye bread. As far as the fish itself goes this might've been the best lake perch I've ever had. It was plump and juicy and fried just right. The crispy coating was a bit thicker than most other spots but I cant recall a more perfectly cooked piece of lake perch in my lifetime. One of the best in-state.

Siebert's Pub (Salem, WI)

Down in Kenosha County you'll find Siebert's Pub located inland not far off the IL/WI state line. There's not much info out there but like every place featured in today's post it's a classic Wisconsin bar. We stopped in for a Friday Fish Fry ft. lake perch last year. I remember we got there around the opening and by the time we left the place was packed. You'd be hard pressed to find an empty bar in Wisconsin on a Friday evening. That said many of the people at Siebert's were here to eat first and foremost. The online reviews are very favorable towards the food. After having their Friday Fish Fry I don't see why the other stuff on their menu wouldn't also be good. Places using lake fish are already showing signs they don't want to just do what's cheapest and easiest. Cod is by far the most popular fish used for fry's in Wisconsin but there's a large contingent of people who make Wisconsin the number one consumer of lake perch in the States. I imagine a few of them are regulars at Siebert's.

Tina's Somers Inn (Somers, WI)

According to a decade old article I read from the Kenosha News the secret has long been out about this place. I remember a really nice crowd at Tina's Somers Inn which sits on Highway E in the village of Somers. It's commonly mentioned as one of the best fish fry's in Kenosha County thus reservations are recommended. They offer a really nice lake perch plate that comes served with fresh cut fries and buttered rye bread as well as cole slaw and tartar sauce. The perch is beer battered making for a crispy outer layer of flavor. One of the best in my book. I also read that Taco Wednesday is popular.

B& D's Village Inn (New Munster, WI)

Next stop is a spot I had passed a few times over the years on the way to and from Lake Geneva. It's a classic tavern that has pictures of fried fish in their sign. The fact there's so little online had me even more intrigued. This is a small town bar to the core. There wasn't much going on when I visited one early afternoon last year but that was fine with me. This place definitely attracts a hyper local crowd. Well they also have a burger on the menu and as many know I'm a Wisconsin Burger aficionado so I decided to try one of them too. Decent enough in that it was fresh made but nothing better than what you'll get from your neighbor at the local block party. Thus I recommend visiting B&D's on a Friday.

Cheeseburger at B&D's Village Inn

Aside from lake perch the other freshwater fish you'll find on WI fish fry menus are walleye and blue gills. Both of them are far less common than even lake perch so when I see a spot offering either of them I will usually give it a go. Especially so with blue gills. Simple is best with just about all fresh fish and they seemed to realize that here. A light coating of cornmeal made this one of the better fish fry's I've come by. Bite sized filet's with sweet white meat. They make for the perfect fish nuggets.

Wilmot Riverside (Wilmot, WI)

I'm sorry if I sound like a broken record but all bars in Wisconsin have a very Wisconsin feel to them. Wilmot Riverside in the ski town of Wilmot is no different. It's a quintessential Wisconsin bar. By which I mean it's housed in an old building (I was told it's housed a bar since the late 1800’s) with a bartender a few years past her prime, a kitchen behind the bar, cheap drinks, and a yocal yapping about how he prefers watching high school bball over the NBA. I don't know. He sounded a bit flaky to me. Just like my fried walleye. Wilmot Riverside hand breads two beautiful pieces of fresh walleye for their Friday Fish Fry. The potato pancakes are the same ones many other spots use and seem to be more like a hash brown than a potato pancake. I'm still searching for a place that does a great potato pancake. In the meantime the breading from here needed a tad more seasoning but the walleye itself was wonderful. Every time I try walleye I'm reminded just how underrated it is for making fried fish.
