More from Michigan except we're back in Chicago, and so is Leo's Coney Island. The regional QSR out of Birmingham Michigan has returned to Chicago and the Lakeview area. It opened as a full service spot on Southport back around 2010 but they didn't last past a couple years despite lots of people from Michigan that were excited to have them. Leo's was started in 1972 and today they have more than 60 locations in Michigan. If I'm not mistaken Chicago is their only out of state location.

The menu at Leo's can best be described as Greek style Michigan diner food. It's long and includes the option of breakfast all day as well as many Greek leaning favorites such as lemon rice soup, Greek salad, and of course coney style hot dogs. The stands that first started serving coney dogs were likely in Michigan and were ran by guys from Greece and Macedonia. The coney dog has no relation to Coney Island in New York other then the fact it's possible they called their hot dogs coneys bc that's where they first saw hot dogs being served, upon their arrival to the U.S through Coney Island. Who developed coney style meat sauce and decided it works great with mustard + onions will never be known but Detroit has a style all it's own, and 100's and 100's of spots that serve them in the region. Leo's is one of the bigger names. It's kind of like the Portillo's of coney dogs. One thing the two spots have in common is the use a natural casing wiener. I'm not sure who Leo's uses as their supplier as there's a few of them in Michigan but there's no doubt they're using the real thing and same goes for the sauce. I like a coney dog now and then and Leo's makes a legit one. The same can be said for the lemon soup. This location is more takeout focused so we'll see how that goes.
