Los Dos

-Eating like a Mayan King in the Windy City

The Month of May is here and that means Cinco de Mayo is near. However there isn't a major post to go with it this year. Instead I'm saving them for another time. That said we're still going to continue on with the tradition of posting something related to Mexican food and Los Dos in Downers Grove is today's topic. This modern Mexican restaurant is putting out some exciting stuff in the western 'burbs.

Locals Favorite in Downers Grove

All Mexican restaurants opening up shop need to take a look at how this place does it. While they don't offer anything game changing as far as exotic menu items go, they don't offer the same 25 things most other Mexican restaurants have on their menu. Sure they have tacos, burritos etc. but they're not the same old recipe so many places use. Take the Chicken Salbutes for example.

Salbute

These are a common snack found all over the Yucatan Peninsula, yet to my knowledge this is the only spot in Chicagoland making them. That's a damn shame because the little puffy deep fried tortillas topped with crispy cabbage are a magnificent snack. These are actually better than ones I had in the Yucatan not too long ago. Then theres the tacos. They make a thicker than norm corn tortilla in house and top those with some of the best steak in the cityscape. The result is a head of the class carne asada taco. Even the salsa verde with its charred smokey bits is better than most other examples.

One of my favorite plates from here is the Cochinita Pibil platter. It's been over a year since indulging in it but I remember how much it was enjoyed. They served some of the most tender, least dry citrus marinated pork meat I can remember. Even better is the fact they include the house tortillas with your order and also in the traditional Yucatan way they make silky smooth black beans to go with it. The days of the suburbs being a culinary wasteland are long gone. Los Dos helps prove that fact.
