Backyard Grill

-Got Beef? (and lamb)
Gyro Shops of Chicago

I know many Chicagoan's take pride in the likes of Kronos but there's no denying they killed the homemade gyro. While Greektown hangs on for dear life the homemade Chicago style gyro does the same. While a new wave of authentic Greek restaurants have started serving homemade pork gyros there's only a handful or so left where they're making their cones from lamb and beef. One of them is relatively unknown in that there's never really been much discussion or mentions of Backyard Grill.

Backyard Grill is one of those classic Greek owned Chicago style fast food establishments. These too are fading from the city's restaurant directory though handfuls still remain. You can tell Backyard Grill got a nice facelift within the last 5 years or so but there's also traces of what it used to look like back in the 80's. It's been around for a while and has plenty of it's neighbors to thank. I always drove by this place usually en route for more international flavors along Devon. But then I got tipped they're making gyros in-house here and I've been by a couple times since then. They make a classic Chicago style in that it's similar to the coned stuff but not nearly as ground and definitely a little less greasier with more beef and lamb flavor. I prefer the pork cones popular in actual Greece but when the taste for a Chicago style gyro comes calling the Backyard Grill is basically my new go-to spot.
