Stop 50

-Exploring NW Indiana

Along with the great weather, no school, road trips, baseball and the beach, summertime also brings us some damn good seasonal food operations. When Chicago people think Northwest Indiana they picture large steel plants still in operation giving off awful smells, cheap cigarettes, gambling and if they go a little deeper in...Gary. A different type of world we'll call it. City folk will happily pay the Skyway fee to zip on thru as fast as possible en route to Michigan and beyond. Well you don't have to go too far past Gary to find an area (Michiana) that's booming with locally produced foods and goods that are more than worth the drive alone just to stock up some stuff and eat and or drink somewhere good while doing so. One of those places is Stop 50 Wood Fired Pizzeria located in Michiana Shores.

an instant classic in Michiana Shores, IN

I was first made aware of Stop 50 by the fine food folks over at LTHforum. However due to my undying love for Midwest/Chicago tavern thin style of pizza it took me a minute to get over there. I made a stop there on what was their last weekend of the season last Fall. I've been waiting to get back ever since. So far I've been twice this season. Stop 50 is closed December, January and February so the summertime is their primetime. It all starts with the oven as far as their pizza goes. They make pizza Napoletana using their real deal wood fired oven which can reach anywhere from 900 to 1300 degrees.

Wood Fired Oven

Stop 50 has already gained praise from Rachel Ray to the LTH community who gave them the food forums highest honor in a 'Great Neighborhood Restaurant Award' for their authentic Neapolitan style of pizza topped with fresh local ingredients and to go with that some great service. I've seen the owners in there working hard when it was packed on a weekend night and also laying back with their children on a late weekday afternoon. One of the things that made me know I had to try Stop 50 was the fact most every review I had read was glowing. When I did finally make it there it was with my buddy who learned this style in Naples under certified pizza makers. He said it was probably the best example he's seen outside Italy. Its not just the pizza here though. Dont skip out on the salads made mostly with fresh locally grown ingredients.

House Salad

There's also a small appetizer menu which features a few different things. Your best bet is to get the combo which features a little bit of each their bombastic breadsticks, whoops excuse me, I suffer from Guy Fieri tourettes syndrome. Along with those they do a really fantastic Italian sausage stuffed peppers dish and also the seasonal featured grilled vegetable which is based on whats fresh at the farmers market. Everything hot is made in their oven and when we were talking with the owner who's also the expert pizza maker he was saying how he's cooked everything from fish to tenderloins to s'mores (a menu desert item offered) in it since they first opened. The oven will get to around 1200 degrees at its peak and when they shut it down for the day the wood burns away until its ash in the am. It rarely goes under 300 degrees during the open season.

Appetizer Combo Platter

The breadsticks are the best I have had and its easy to see why since what sets Stop 50 apart from the rest for me and many others is their dough. Their vision is too focus on quality foods made from simple and fresh ingredients creating a taste of tradition. Obviously when it comes to Neapolitan style pizza a big focus is on the dough. Stop 50's hand made from scratch dough is slightly sour tasting and when you get one of their pizzas done perfectly it has both crispy charred bits to it along with the chewiness that makes a great Napoletana pizza pie. When I went with my buddy last Fall he explained me many of the things he was going to look for in their pizza margherita which he said is the gold standard for judging the many wood fired pizzerias popping up around Chicagoland and elsewhere in America.

Pizza Margherita at Stop 50

We were looking for that perfect consistency so I was told. Because real wood fired pizzas are cooked in 900+ degree stone ovens they only take a minute or two to make but its still an art getting it to be perfect each time. You have to stay aware and alot of care goes into making these pies which focus on simple and fresh ingredients. A Pizza Margherita is made with just tomato, mozzarella, basil, extra virgin olive oil and the aforementioned dough. Its all about the quality and freshness in each of the few ingredients used. Our pie was near perfect and stood ground when lifted which I was told is an important factor.

Holding a piece of Margherita

I've become a big fan of wood fired pizza and the more authentic the better. Stop 50 remains at the top of the chain for me. I feel as though their Pizza Margherita is the best version of that example I have had. The freshness in their basil really stands out when you take a bite into it. But it doesn't stop with just the Margherita as far as great options go. Their sausage is really tasty too. I appreciate how they use very thinly sliced pieces of sausage. Kind of like you would expect the pepperoni on your pizza to come. Included with the sausage is tomato, mozzarella and marinara. I would suggest getting at least two pies if there are three of you, they arent big and since they're so good, they go quick.

Sausage Pie

The bottom

The real go-to at Stop 50 for me though is their seasonal specialty pizza. It switches with whats in season and each time I've been I was blown away by their offering. In fact the last couple times I was there this year I wanted to try their asparagus, red onion, prosciutto and smoked mozzarella pizza but they were out of prosciutto the first time and then the asparagus wasn't up to par on my most recent visit so they were getting ready to switch it up. In its place that day they had an heirloom tomato with red onions, Gorgonzola, pine nuts and basil pie that was the best pizza without any meat on top that I've ever had.

Seasonal Specialty Pizza at Stop 50

On my first ever visit as I had already mentioned it was their last weekend so it was the Fall. I think it was around Thanksgiving and they had an excellent seasonal selection then as well. The ingredients seen in the picture I took below came together like none other I have had. I've determined that I love nuts on pizza. This was a pie I hope they offer regularly as the season shifts to a close because I plan on taking in some Fall colors around this region and eating one this upcoming year. Stop 50 is a great option for food if your vacationing in Michiana or the Harbor Country areas of Michigan and enjoy really good pizza. Its lovely outdoors when the weather is right.

The specialty featured pizza changes with whats in season...

Simply Magnificent

Wine and beer is offered at Stop 50 and they have a nice dessert menu too. If its summertime and its real hot and you feel like something cool try their gelato. But if you've always had an infatuation with s'mores and wondered how cool it would be to able to make them every day in their oven when you first walked in, you're in luck. They have a fantastic rendition of the classic summertime camping snack made with marshmallows roasted in their wood burning oven.

Stop 50's S'mores desert

The name Stop 50 comes from the old way of giving directions and getting around in the Michigan City region. If you wanted to find someones house in the Long Beach and Sheridan Beach area of Indiana more times than not someone would mention a bus stop. "Turn right at Stop 26 and go until you get to the beach" or something like that was how you would explain where to go. These days the buses are no longer in use but the stops are still there and used for direction giving. Everyone that's in the know, knows how to get to Stop 50 these days but even if your a first timer their signs will lead you to them. I always take a pizza to go and its almost as good the next day as they are when brought out piping hot to your table when dining in. You're welcome for the review. Don't say you never knew. Check them out this summer.

Proving once again! "There's more than corn in Indiana!!!"

D'Candela

-Grubbing in Chicago
Where the locals eat.

When I first began this food blog it was my goal to expose the lesser known spots. Granted I didn't have all that many people who I was going to expose the little mom and pop shops to but it was what I wanted to do. It's also how I found LTHforum one day. While looking for the places putting out fantastic food that so few people know about and those that do, share them with those interested. I found D'Candela when it got a few thumbs up rec's from people who's taste buds (posts) I trusted. The man behind the mask at 'Fuckerberg on Food' praised D'Candela for it it's Peruvian style rotisserie chicken (as others had already done) and I finally listened.

A Local Peruvians favorite located on Kedzie in Albany Park (Pic from LTHforum)

Normally rotisserie chicken is what it is. A bird lightly seasoned and cooked until well done on a rotating spit. Nowadays damn near every supermarket in America has them on offer, f*uck even some gas stations got them too. I have nothing against supermarket rotisserie chicken and in fact I use it when I'm too lazy to cook a chicken for noodle soup or enchiladas and other stuff like that. It's not bad when the dry meat is shredded apart and inserted into a variety of other flavors where it becomes a compliment and not the main player. Not the case at D'Candela where they roast their chickens over live charcoal and heavily season each with garlic, oregano and other special seasonings. I take back some of the stuff I said about rotating birds. This is rotisserie chicken and it's anything but bland.

Pollo Rostizado

The skin doesn't stay crisp but you wont care after you try this top notch South American style rotisserie chicken. When I was waiting for my order I could smell the charcoal burning in the waiting area, I also got the free cup of soup they give, very nice people that run this place and bring a taste of whats home to them to others in Chicago. The chicken is the main draw of the house but when you go in and see a bunch of Peruvian families dining in, you'll see a bunch of other tasty looking menu options. One example being their Peruvian fried rice. You gotta try the maduros too. Both are so good. I'm a sucker for Chinese fusion cuisine and the dishes created when Chinese people emigrate elsewhere. Lots of Latin and Caribbean variations can be found including in Peru where Chinese immigrants settled in the 19th century and had to embrace the ingredients they could get while still recreating a taste from back home.

Peruvian Fried Rice

Arroz Chaufa aka Peruvian fried rice is a great example and D'Candela does a good one. I hear their chupe de camerones aka shrimp soup is even better. It's a shame to say this but I haven't been here in at least a year and that's not right. The menu in fact has much more to offer and you can see some of the tips and what to get and some bonus photos of some of these foods too on THIS thread over at LTHforum. Don't go there and not try their luscious homemade salsas! So D'Candela my sincere apologies, I'll be getting back real soon. If you've never been, you should check it out too. Maybe I'll see you there.

Summertime Chi

-Grubbing in Chicago
Summertime eats.

June is here and we can only hope summer is pretty much officially here with it. So with that its only fair we head out today to a few different summertime options. These three places we'll visit arent open year round but rather only when the warm weather comes around. They are summertime fixes for the people that live near them and those passing by. Lets check them out.

The Dog House 2

On Lawrence avenue just east off the Highway

First up is a walk up hot dog stand over on Lawrence just east off I-90. The Dog House 2 recently made the switch over to Vienna Beef and with that they serve their natural casing dogs. It's a good marriage that should last forever. I walked up and tried their dogs a couple times so far this year and they're a great option to have if you're in the neighborhood. The chili cheese dog would of scored pretty well if it was around when I did 'The Chase for Chicago's Finest Chili Cheese Dog' a few years back.

Chili Cheese Dog

I'm more a fan of the minimalist dog than I am the full fledged Chicago style (in tourists eyes anyway). But when a place makes a perfect Chi-Style they can be very enjoyable. It doesn't start with the toppings granted they have to be spot on, it starts with the hot dog. If your not using natural casing, I'm not stopping by for a dog. The difference for me is day and night. They use the NC dog here and top it perfectly inside a poppy seed bun. Consider this one a winner.

Grill in the Park

On Diversey in the Park

Located in Lincoln Park, the actual park not just the neighborhood, Grill in the Park is there for joggers, bikers, golfers and walker by's who might need a quick eat or drink while taking in the day. Open for the season when it starts to get nice outside they serve hamburgers, hot dogs and tacos. While the tacos arent authentic in the Mexican sense the fish tacos are still great. The man who owns this place also does 'Twisted Lizard' so these have more of a southwest flair. Their fish tacos were named best in city by the Tribune a few years back. I haven't done my own test for the best but will agree that these are good. Not a bad snack option to have before or after a high stakes game of Mini Golf.

The Original Rainbow Cone

Since 1926 in the Beverly Neighborhood (Pic by: Toddling Around Chicagoland)

Rainbow Cone is heading towards turning 90 years old soon. Along with the Cubs and Sox it's been a fixture of Chicago summers since its beginning. One of the signature offerings each year at the 'Taste of Chicago' it's been a real treat to enjoy these since my youth. Housed in its distinct looking pink building in the Beverly neighborhood on Chicago's southside we used to stop here after Sunday dinner at my grandma's. What a great way to end the weekend it was getting to lick away on a rainbow cone. I'm an Italian ice guy but love me a rainbow cone. From top to bottom they include orange sherbert followed by my favorites the pistachio and then Palmer House (New York Vanilla w/ Cherries and Walnuts) and then come strawberry and chocolate. Pure Chicago.

Five More Burgers (Part 2)

-Got beef?
The Burgers of Chi

I cant believe it's almost June. Thus National Hamburger Month aka May is rounding up. We've had some fantastic burgers from Chicagoland and those from the six different states featured in the 'Midwest Burger Crawl'. So to say goodbye to May we wave you off with one of our '5 More...' specials. Here are five different hamburgers from places previously featured here on S'C'&C with the King. Happy Hamburger Month. See y'all in June. You're going to want to stay tuned.

LinkMr. D's (Click for more)

If someone ever asked me my top spots for "Streets and Sans Mans" type eating Mr. D's would be one of the first mentioned. Unless you live in a meat (and shoes) free community in Arcata, California then this is the type of lunch spot you want in your neighborhood. The shish kebab and steak sandwiches, as anybody who's been there knows are at the top of the standings when it comes to top notch tasting bang for buck value. Someday sooner than later I'll try and score their beef with hot which some regulars swear by. In the meantime I'm here to tell you that their burgers are also near the top when it comes to Chi-Style fast food stands and their selections. Char grilled to perfection go with a double. The fries that accompany each order are some of the best around.

Devil Dawgs (Click for more)

When Devil Dawgs first opened I was in there within a few weeks and enjoyed it now and then for a little while after that I didnt make it back for a minute. Not because I don't like the place. As I very much did/do but rather I just kind of forgot and when I did remember, I was able to convince myself to save the calories for future unposted places. No more self control after stopping in after a heavy drinking session at Local Option with Central Waters Brewery. I got a double one of their Kick Ass Green Chile cheeseburgers (new since my last visit) and I've had quite a few since. I think it's the best burger in the neighborhood. Devil Dawgs is a place anyone in Chicago would love to have amongst their locally owned "Chicago style fast food stand" options. I Know I do.

Odge's (Click for more)

Ahh yes when it comes to the looks of old school Chicago Style Hot Dog Stands, Odge's has that down. When passing by it on Damen it's as if theres a big old carnival going on in the collage with drawings of hot dogs and tacos and the inside is quirky with old lunch boxes and Threes Stooges memorabilia and the likes on display. It's a hot dog stand but as the sign outside on the building tells us, the burgers are handmade. Available as a singles or doubles I'd rec a double since it's only a $1 more ($5.75) and the patties are thin. Specially seasoned you can dress your Odge burger whatever way you like. I like everything plus grilled. Best not to miss out on their perfectly potent grilled onions. The fries are frozen but they fry them to a crisp, so that's a plus and they come with your burgers. Another great burger at a Chicago Hot Dog Stand.

Mr. J's (Click for more)

Mr. J's is one of my favorite places in the city for a grilled chicken sandwich. Located on Clark street just off Chicago it's a popular late-nite spot with everyone from the drunken fools to the Guardian Angel's and the bad guys they look out for. One time I steered away from my go to grilled chicken sandwich order and tried the burger they claim to be the home of, The Dagwood. It's basically your average double cheeseburger served with fries on the side and tastes better the later the night becomes and hungrier you get.

Jury's (Click for more)

Last May during National Hamburger Month we took a trip into Lincoln Square over to Jury's. It's a place that has long been lauded as having one of the best burgers in Chicago, I've been there a few times thru life. I was back there last year and decided to switch it up a bit and order their 'judge burger' which is the standard 1/2 pound burger topped with cheddar cheese, bacon and sliced avocado. Next time and for now on it'll be this that I order. The avocado was as fresh of one I had ate in a while so that played a role in its goodness factor but I still think Jury's does indeed do a very satisfying bar burger.

Skylark

-Got beef?
The Burgers of Chi

The Skyark, if you've never been nor heard of it, when driving by you might wonder it is. Sitting in an old building on the corner of Halsted and Cermak this place is hipster heaven and a popular spot for the after 2am bar scene. Nonetheless its also a great place to go get a burger and some good micro beer from the draft right when they open around 4p. Nothing about it from the outside would give a clue to either of these things but 'tis true. Trust me.

A popular drinking spot in Pilsen (Photo by Avoision. com)

I had been into the Skylark a few times before I even tried their food. As I mentioned it's got a really nice beer list and it's no frills inside makes for the type of place that can compliment a beer so welll. Nothing fancy here, just a really nice old wood bar and some tables behind it for people to eat or chat at. They take it back to 1993 with a 'Demolition Man' pinball machine. I had known about the tater tots at the Skylark which if you didn't know are homemade. I actually wasn't aware there was such things as homemade tots until I found this out. Are they the real deal? Yes they are, they're crispy on the outside while creamy from within.

A view from inside

The burger I had heard good things from over on LTH amongst some other places. I gave it go when I read THIS post over there. A poster mentions that Skylark is his gold standard for good burgers and they do a taste off of it versus some other places around town. The burger comes cooked to request and topped with cole salw and a fried onion ring. Served on a very nice bun with their famous crispy tater tots I really liked their housenamed burger here. Everything seemed to go really well with other as far as the toppings go and the beef itself had flavor and came cooked to my medium rare request. Skylark is a great place in Chicago for brews and a burger, especially those that appreciate good beer and burgers made with care. Happy Hamburger Month Chicago.

Miller's Bar

-Got beef?
The Burgers of Michigan

Happy Hamburger Month...and down the stretch they come! Were rounding up our 8 state 'Midwest Burger March' today here in Michigan before we head back to Chicago for a few more tastes. Located just outside of Detroit, Dearborn Michigan was once the headquarters to Ford Motor Company and today it's one of the best places to eat and explore Arab-American food and culture. On a recent trip to Detroit I got to do all that and will report back ASAP. In the meantime we head to a place there that's been serving up their famous burgers since 1941.

a longtime Detroit-Metro area favorite

Miller's Bar is commonly mentioned in "Top-10 Best Burgers in the US" lists as well as the state of Michigan's best burger. The Don King like hyped "10 Best..." this and that lists are impossible to do with things like burgers, especially here in the USA where there's 1000's of worthy ones, but they can still be fun to read. I was impressed with the bar itself at Miller's which is representative of so many other "good old" places in the Detroit area. Classic old school. It's a bar but it's their burgers aka 'Ground Rounds' that people flock there for. They've been making them the same way since the beginning and that's by cooking the 8 ounce patties of fresh beef on the old school griddle behind the bar.

a view from the bar

Ladies working the griddle

All you have to tell the person taking your order is how you want your burger done and whether or not you want cheese on it. You want onions? You can ask for those with pickles if you please and they'll send you a nice sized fully sliced piece of raw onion. You like your onions on your burgers grilled? Too bad. The burger is no frills and its not about whats on it but rather the beef itself. I was very satisfied and pleased to taste the tradition that are the ground rounds at Miller's. It's an honor system so you pay at the bar when leaving. If your a fan of the classic places that seem to take you into a different era when you step inside, give Miller's a try. If your a fan of burgers, you need to see for yourself what many consider the best. Count me a fan.

XXX Family Restaurant

-Got beef?
The Burgers of Indiana

Welcome back to the 'Midwest Burger Bowl' Today were headed down into Indiana. "Cant stop, wont stop eating these hamburgers" is what I heard a student (presumably) from Purdue University say as he sat hungover eating hamburgers on the Sunday morning I stopped into Triple XXX Family Restaurant in West Lafayette, Indiana. It's the states first and thus oldest Drive In and they've been slanging their famous root beer and hamburgers aka chopped steaks since 1929. Open 24 Hours a day (Sun. til 10p) XXX has long been a favorite of many who went to Perdue or has driven thru West Lafayette and knew where to stop in at. This is the place to eat when you do as I did en route to Indianapolis this past winter.

a longtime Indiana favorite

The name and origin of XXX actually goes back to a brand of beer that Anheiser Busch started brewing in Galveston, TX back in the late 1800's/early 1900's. Each barrel was labeled 'XXX' and the beer died with prohibition which is when 'XXX' Soft Drinks were born. Their root beer and ginger ale were favorites and Triple XXX still uses the original recipe for their root beer that the Drive In was named after. I thought this was an excellent brew and I'm a big fan of homemade/micro brewed root beers. On my visit it wasn't just the college kids dining in but families and senior citizen couples as well as tourists so to say such as myself.

a peak inside the place

The menu includes breakfast options which come in handy during the wee hours but its all about the burgers or the 'prime cuts' as their called on the menu. They use fresh never frozen sirloin which is ground on site along with real cheese. Same way since day one and that's why people love it. They offer a few house favorites as far as burgers including the 'Duane Pervis All American'. They take a quarter pound of their house ground sirloin and top it with creamy peanut butter as well as the usual suspects. Not this time. I went classic on my first visit and got a double cheeseburger with pickles, mustard and onions. It was easy to taste why people have a connection to this place. This is what all burgers once were before the fast food and retail folks made them into pre-formed hockey pucks that turn into tasteless waste. XXX Family Restaurant continues to serve a real American burger. Since 1929 for a reason.

Zweig's Grill

-Got beef?
The Burgers of Wisconsin

Welcome back to the 'Midwest Burger Crawl'. Since the burgers of Wisconsin are something we do so well here, today we decided to stay in state and visit Zwieg's in Watertown. I grew up in the city but love visiting small town America. Especially in Wisconsin which seems to have so many of them all with a main street that includes an old theater, diner, tavern, ice cream spot, butcher/bakery, barber shop, Drug store, painted murals on the old buildings and so on. I've seen alot of these Main streets in the state and Watertown's is one of the best. It was pretty alive with cars and people walking along with all the regular things that a Main street in Wisco has.

Mullen's Dairy Bar is classic Americana

Well if you ever make it thru the area or are near here (not far from Johnson Creek Outlet Mall and right off I-94) I would recommend doing as follows. Mullen's Dairy Bar seen in the pic above is Located on Main street and its vintage Wisconsin. They make their own ice cream and have all the old school equipment a parlor should have. It reminded me of Mickie's Dairy Bar in Madison but instead of the food its known for its ice cream concoctions. I saw some great things on the menu including a sherbet drink made with phosphate water but had to go with a chocolate malt on my first visit. Boy am I glad I did and would highly recommend you do the same. Get it to go and then head down Main street towards Zwieg's.

Watertown, WI

I read about Zwieg's in Hamburger America and it's been on my radar since then. Just another old ass place serving the same burgers the same way just like back in the day. Gotta love it. It felt like half diner and half supper club inside of there. It's been around in this location for over half a century and its a nice site when rolling up on it down Main street. We parked the car and went in to place an order. The menu had the usual suspects on a diner for breakfast like omelets and American fries and bacon and eggs and some of the usual's on a Supper club menu like broasted chicken with mashed potatoes and gravy and a Friday fish fry. Pure Wisconsin.

Image Image
Article about switching the grill after 50+ years...I love the clock

We were there for the double cheeseburgers (which I've come to taste are best in Wisconsin) with fried onions, pickles and mustard. We also got an order of fries which were frozen crinkle cut and thus 'eh. As like everywhere else the service was charming and the burger expertly prepared. Meat patties were preformed but were fresh and the taste of this one was right up there with the rest in the Jefferson county area, one of the best hot spots in a state with so many. Paired with that malt from Mullen's its one helluva lunch. Happy Hamburger Month.
