The Green Post

English Pub Food in Lincoln Square

If you asked me to name my Top 20 cuisines I'm not sure if English food would make the cut. It's not bc I think it sucks, in fact I think it can be pretty damn good. But the problem is there's not a ton of variety as far as I can tell. But they do some things very well such as savory pies and fish and chips. English food might not be high on my list of favorite cuisines but a tour of pubs in England is up there as far as bucketlist trips go. I also wouldn't mind seeing a few more English focused pubs in Chicago. We got a few but we could use some more spots like The Green Post in Lincoln Square.

Recently Opened in Lincoln Square

The Green Post opened in the Fall of last year. It's owned by the guys who run The Northman and Bar on Buena. It's an all day cafe and also a pub so they do breakfast, lunch and dinner. If you visit in the morning you can choose from a variety of pastries on offer plus a few breakfast pie options. I ended up here during the men's World Cup last year and watched one of the games while eating a hearty corned beef hash breakfast pie. Diced corned beef with potatoes and gravy hit the spot. The Green Post does savory pies in the evening and also offers a pie and a pint deal for happy hour ($15).

As far as the dinner goes you'll find the typical English pub classics like Welsh Rarebit, a curry, and even a crisp sandwich (potato chips among other things between bread). I have to try the fish and chips first and foremost when I'm at at English pub like this so that's what I did on a recent visit for dinner. They do a cider battered haddock and Kennebec fries served with a tartar and a curry sauce for dipping. I thought this was a good order, not great. It was fried a bit too long which meant it wasn't as flaky as it should be but the fries were nice and the perfect match for their tasty curry sauce. Most importantly with an English pub the atmosphere here is on point. You can sit at the bar and drink beer or you can cuddle up next to the fireplace with a book and some coffee. It's a nice place to hang out.
