The Cabin's Picnic Basket

-The Sammy's of Chi

In this here time of mystery meat sandwiches delivered freaky fast I have a refreshing opening to report on. It's called The Cabin's Picnic Basket and it sits on the 4100 block of North Pulaski. It's an old school sandwich shop that's attached to an old school neighborhood tavern in Old Irving Park.

I had a friend who liked to frequent this bar when he lived in the city so I was happy to go back. I visited around 3p on a weekday and there were three regulars huddled up drinking. The sandwich shop is connected to the bar though it also has it's own entrance. When you walk up to the counter you're greeted by a pad with pen and paper which has the menu on it. Like the places of yesteryear you fill out your order and hand it to the lady behind the counter. Once paid for your sandwich is made to order down to the meat being sliced fresh. Options are their signature sandwich with ham and turkey which is what I tried as well as Manny's corned beef and roast beef as well as a classic peanut butter and jelly sandwich. You choose exactly how you like your sandwich down to the choice of bread, cheese, and toppings. It's not destination dining but it is a place to get a satisfying sandwich.
